Stanford vs California: ECU fires Montgomery as football coach before final game against

University officials announced Thursday that head football coach Scottie Montgomery has been fired after a lackluster 9-26 record over the past three seasons.

The move comes two days before the Pirates face North University in Raleigh in the season finale. Defensive coordinator David Blackwell will lead the 3-8 team for the game and during the upcoming recruiting period, officials said.

“As much as we would have liked the outcome to be different, the progress of a program is ultimately measured by its competitiveness, win total and championships,” Chancellor Cecil Staton said in a statement. “It is our decision to move in a different direction with new leadership.”

“He cared deeply for his players, was an outstanding mentor and always focused on the word ‘student’ in student-athlete. We wish him all the best,” he said.

Montgomery has two years left on his contract, which includes a base annual salary of $400,000, plus additional compensation for promotions and broadcast obligations. The buyout clause in his contract is for the base salary only, which isn’t paid out of taxpayer funding.

The Pirates posted a 4-20 mark in American Athletic Conference play under Montgomery, which included a pair of fourth-place finishes in the East Division in 2016 and 2017 and a fifth-place finish this year.

Montgomery previously spent three years on Duke University’s staff, the last two as the Blue Devils’ assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He also coached receivers at Duke, his alma mater, from 2006 to 2009. In between the Duke stints, he spent three seasons as wide receivers coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

ECU is still searching for an athletics director, and that person will hire the next football coach, officials said.

Montgomery is the second area football coach to be fired in the last week. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill let coach Larry Fedora go on Sunday after seven seasons.

UAB says Bill Clark is poised to become the highest-paid coach in Conference USA.Blazers athletic director Mark Ingram said Friday that Clark has agreed in principle to a new five-year deal. Clark’s pay would start at $1.45 million and rise to $1.65 million in the final year, 2023-24.

The contract is pending approval by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees.Clark has led the Blazers into the Conference USA championship game Saturday at Middle Tennessee. UAB is 17-8 since restarting the program after it was shut down for financial reasons, including a school-record nine wins so far this season.

Ron Gray, president pro tem of the trustees, says the board’s compensation committee will hold a special meeting “in the coming weeks” to formally review the deal. The UAB football team left for Mur2018sboro, Tennessee, Friday afternoon. The Blazers will play Middle Tennessee State University Saturday in their first Conference USA Football Championship Game in program history.

Also on Friday, UAB head football coach Bill Clark and UAB agreed to a five-year contract extension that extends through the 2023-2024 football season. Clark’s compensation will begin at $1.45 million and reach $1.65 million per year over the life of the contract.UAB and Middle Tennessee kickoff Saturday at 12:30pm CT in Mur2018sboro, Tennessee.

The Blazers finished the season on a bit of a down note by losing their last two games but that doesn’t take away from what the team and coach Bill Clark have accomplished this season. After losing to Coastal Carolina in week two they rattled off 8 wins in a row to lock up the West division. Through that run their defense was the story.

They rank nationally in the top 25 in most of the important statistical categories including points per game allowed and yards allowed. They also rank number four nationally in something that could help them win this game and that is sacks. The Blazers have a combined twelve sacks.

The offense sputtered last week only scoring three points but quarterback A.J. Erdely was returning from injury and workhorse running back left the game after only one carry and he remains questionable for this game.
The Blue Raiders have had roller coaster season to say the least. They started out 2-2 but that second win was over division favorite FAU and became something to build on.

Their only conference loss would be on the road to an improving FIU team and that was after their star quarterback Brent Stockstill left the game due to injury. After that they ran the table in conference including the win over UAB and locked up the East after FIU lost to Marshall in the final Saturday of the season. Winning last week has allowed them to host their first ever conference championship game.

The offense has been what has carried them to this point and Stockstill has almost 3,000 yards passing and 26 touchdowns. He will look to spread the ball around but mostly to his main target Ty Lee who has over 800 yards receiving this season.Sometimes it happens that two teams end up playing a conference-game rematch a week after playing one another in the final regular season game. It will happen this year in the Conference USA title game, as Middle Tennessee gets ready to welcome UAB to Mur2018sboro for a second straight week.

On Thanksgiving weekend, the Blue Raiders took down the Blazers in a 27-3 walkover. The win moved Middle Tennessee ahead of Florida International for the C-USA East title, as Brent Stockstill went 22-of-29 for 261 yards and two scores through the air. The backfield added 133 yards and a rushing score, while the defense held UAB to only 89 total yards as the Blazers laid down.

UAB has largely dominated this season with one of the nation’s top 10 defenses, but it was Middle Tennessee that came up big in their last meeting. Bill Clark’s team has been impressive after their return from their 2014 shutdown, and they are on the cusp of the school’s first-ever conference title in any league.

Middle Tennessee, meanwhile, will win their 14th all-time conference title and their first since the 2006 Sun Belt season if they take down the Blazers at home. Here’s how you can 2018 the Conference USA championship game on Saturday between UAB and Middle Tennessee:

Akron vs South Carolina

Akron vs South Carolina: South Carolina is less than 24 hours away from concluding its regular season slate of games as kickoff against Akron is set for noon on the SEC Alternate Channel. The Gamecocks (6-5) aren’t used to playing on this day as there has only been one SEC Championship game appearance in program history, and the Clemson contest typically ends the season. But with a makeup game scheduled against the Zips (4-7), the Gamecocks are trying to get one more win prior to bowl season.

According to the South Carolina game notes, the Akron football team was established in 1891 when the school was known as Buchtel College and later became the University of Akron in 1913. In 1926, the athletic teams were named the Zippers after rubber boots manufactured by the B.F. Goodrich Company, which was headquartered in Akron at the time. The name was shortened to “Zips” in 1950.

Zips head coach Terry Bowden has a 34-50 record in his seven seasons at the school. He has brought his team to two bowl games after winning just one game his first season with the team. He has previously been a head coach at Auburn, and has a 2-0 record all-time against the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks have won 32 of their last 35 non-conference home games. The only three losses have come to Clemson twice and The Citadel. South Carolina is 2-0 this season in home non-conference games with wins over Coastal Carolina and Chattanooga.

South Carolina and Akron will kickoff at noon on Saturday. Television coverage will be provided by the SEC Alternate Channel.

College football enthusiasts may have bigger games on their mind on Saturday, but North Carolina and East Carolina still have a few noteworthy qualities.

Tar Heels quarterback Bryn Renner has a big-time arm, and East Carolina’s Shane Carden has looked solid in his first two appearances.

Both of these teams have a long way to go before they’re worthy of the Top 25, but you have to start somewhere.

North Carolina has enough talent to eventually break into the mix, but it must score a blowout win here. The Pirates are not expected to break the barrier, but no one wants to lose to their in-state rival.

The Tar Heels have been very inconsistent through the season’s first three weeks. They show flashes of brilliance, then they commit some boneheaded play minutes later.

East Carolina vs NC State Football Free Signup Tv

Associated Press reporter Aaron Beard supplied a quote (via Knoxville News-Sentinel) from Bryn Renner regarding his team’s shaky play:

East Carolina head coach Ruffin McNeill talked about the emotions involved in this game in his weekly press conference (via East Carolina’s official website):

Carden didn’t start the Pirates season opener against Appalachian State, but he’s played both games since. In two games, he’s thrown for 311 yards and two touchdowns. He’s only a sophomore, so there’s still room to improve.

The Pirates are No. 92 in the nation in scoring. Carden must step up if they want to steal one from their in-state nemesis.

The Tar Heels are 1-2, but Renner has turned in three excellent performances. Through the first three weeks, his quarterback rating is 158.2. He’s thrown for 870 yards and nine touchdowns with three interceptions.

North Carolina still has some work to do defensively, but its offense will push it past the Pirates. Renner’s throwing ability is too much for the East Carolina defense to contain, and the Pirates won’t score enough points to counteract that production.

Louisiana vs Appalachian State

Since becoming conference rivals five years ago Appalachian State is 5-0 straight up and 3-2 against the spread in the series with Louisiana-Lafayette, winning those games by an average score of 35-11. The Mountaineers are favored by a big number over the Ragin’ Cajuns for the inaugural Sun Belt Conference championship game Saturday afternoon on Appalachian State’s home field in Boone.

College football point spread: The Mountaineers opened as 19-point favorites, according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark. (Line updates and matchup report)

College football betting pick, via OddsShark computer: 47.0-18.8 Mountaineers (College football picks on every game)

The Cajuns finished their regular season with three straight victories, including a 31-28 decision over Louisiana-Monroe last week. Louisiana drove its first three possessions of the game 75, 90 and 65 yards to touchdowns, led 24-21 at the half, then scored the first seven points of the second half and held on from there, surviving a missed Warhawks field goal attempt at the buzzer.

With the victory, the Cajuns clinched the SBC West title. On the afternoon, Louisiana out-gained ULM 453-344, out-rushed the Warhawks 240-143, held a 33/27 edge in time of possession and won the turnover battle 2-1.

So the Ragin’ Cajuns have now out-gained and out-rushed five of their last eight opponents, going 6-2 ATS over that span.

Appalachian State finished its regular season with four straight wins, capped off by a 21-10 triumph over Troy last week. The Mountaineers missed a field goal on their first possession of the game, then scored touchdowns on their next three to lead 21-3 at the half. Appalachian State allowed the Trojans to pull within 11 points in the third quarter but hung on from there to clinch the SBC East title.

Unfortunately for their financial backers, the Mountaineers came up empty on a drive that reached the Troy 27-yard line in the fourth quarter, then ended the game on the Trojans’ 25 and just missed covering as 12-point favorites.

On the afternoon, Appalachian State out-gained the Trojans 314-223, out-rushed Troy 201-53, ground out a 36/24 time of possession advantage and won the turnover battle 4-1.

The Mountaineers have now out-gained 10 of their 11 opponents this season, including Penn State, and out-rushed nine of 11 foes. Appalachian State is also 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS at home this season, and 4-2 ATS when favored by less than 20 points.

Appalachian State defeated Louisiana back in October, 27-17, but couldn’t quite cover a 25-point spread. The Mountaineers led that game 27-10 but gave up a meaningless Cajuns touchdown with one minute to go. As for Saturday’s game, a 27-10 final would give Appalachian State the cash.

Ultimately, the Mountaineers are 165 yards per game better on defense than Louisiana, and that should make the difference. Smart money here gives the points with Appalachian State.

SEC Championship 2018 — Georgia vs Alabama: Live stream, watch online, TV channel

No. 1 Alabama and No. 4 Georgia will square off Saturday afternoon in the same building where the Crimson Tide walked off with a national championship over Georgia in overtime just 11 months ago. This time, the SEC title will be on the line in an SEC Championship Game that essentially serves as a national quarterfinal leading into the College Football Playoff.

Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa came off the bench in that title game, throwing three touchdowns in the second half and overtime; now he’s back leading a team that’s loaded with offensive weapons. Bulldogs quarterback Jake Fromm is no slouch either, and he has enough playmakers at his disposal to keep the Tide defense honest.

Here’s how you can watch and stream the 2018 SEC Championship Game on Saturday afternoon. Georgia vs Alabama Football Free Signup Game Tv

Alabama will win if … it shuts down the run. The Bulldogs running game has picked up of late thanks to the emergence (and health) of star D’Andre Swift. He has topped the 100-yard mark in four of the last five games, with the UMass game being the only outlier down the stretch. His ability to make plays as a runner and receiver, combined with Elijah Holyfield’s ability to break tackles, makes Georgia’s rushing attack dangerous. If Quinnen Williams, Isaiah Buggs and Co. can stop them on, Fromm won’t be able to work off play-action and the entire Bulldogs offense will crumble.

Georgia will win if … the defensive front has its best day. Tagovailoa has been nearly unflappable, but the leg injuries became an issue down the stretch. If Georgia can get in the backfield and the pressure gets home, that injury could come into play. If Tagovailoa has time in the pocket, he will pick any team apart — even a secondary as good as that of Georgia.

SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: ALABAMA VS. GEORGIA ODDS, PICKS, PREDICTIONS FROM MODEL ON 43-23 RUN

The 2018 SEC Championship Game will be a rematch of last year’s College Football Playoff final as Alabama battles Georgia in Atlanta on CBS at 4 p.m. ET. Both teams have College Football Playoff aspirations again, and while it’s possible Alabama could get in despite a loss, the simplest way in for both teams is with a victory. The Crimson Tide are 13.5-point favorites and the total is 63.5 in the latest Alabama vs. Georgia odds. However, with the 2018 SEC championship and a shot at a national title on the line, expect both teams to be highly motivated. So before you make any Alabama vs. Georgia picks and predictions, be sure to take a look at the projections from the advanced computer model at SportsLine.

The advanced computer simulates every FBS game 10,000 times, and those who have followed it have seen massive returns. Over the past three years, this proprietary computer model has generated a jaw-dropping $4,210 profit for $100 bettors.

The model made some huge calls during Rivalry Week, including nailing Ohio State’soutright upset of Michigan as a 4.5-point underdog. And when it comes to all top-rated picks, the model has been red-hot, entering Championship Week on a blistering 43-23 run. Anybody who has followed it is way, way up. SEC Championship Game 2018 Football Free Signup Game Tv

Now, it has simulated every possible play for Alabama vs. Georgia (stream live on fuboTV) 10,000 times. We can tell you it is leaning toward the under, but it has a strong against the spread pick, saying one side hits in nearly 60 percent of simulations. You absolutely need to see it before locking in your own picks.

The model has factored in that Alabama’s offense runs through quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The Heisman Trophy contender has been nothing short of brilliant all season. He has completed 70 percent of his passes for over 3,100 yards and 36 touchdowns — and he has tossed just two interceptions. He also has racked up 211 rushing yards and has run in five more scores. His top receiver, Jerry Jeudy, is a dynamic deep threat who has hauled in 56 receptions for 1,079 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Crimson Tide also employ a grinding ground game that nets over 5 yards per carry. Behind one of the most imposing offensive lines in college football, the one-two punch of Najee Harris and Damien Harris creates headaches for opposing front sevens. Both running backs are averaging over 6 yards per carry and have combined for 11 touchdowns.

But just because the Crimson Tide are rolling doesn’t mean they’ll cover a huge number against the Bulldogs in the 2018 SEC Championship.

Georgia has held opponents to 200 passing yards or less in eight of its 12 games this season. And the Bulldogs also have plenty of power of their own on offense.

After the loss to LSU, the Bulldogs rededicated themselves to running the football with authority, and they’ve been doing so ever since. During its current five-game winning streak, Georgia is averaging well over 300 yards rushing per game and is gaining seven yards per carry. And Alabama’s defense has given up 405 yards rushing and three touchdowns the last two weeks.

So, which side of Alabama vs. Georgia hits against the spread in nearly 60 percent of simulations? Visit SportsLine now to see the strong pick for the SEC Championship Game, all from the model that has returned over $4,000 in profit for $100 bettors, and find out.

Ohio State vs Northwestern: Prediction, pick, Big Ten championship odds, line, TV, live stream, watch online

Ohio State has long been one of the most dominant teams in the Big Ten, and it has maintained that position since Urban Meyer took over the program in 2012. Still, as dominant as it has been, you might be surprised to learn that the Buckeyes have only won two Big Ten titles in Meyer’s first six seasons. The first came during the 2014 season when the Buckeyes went on to win the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes returned to Indianapolis for the first time since then last season, beating Wisconsin 27-21 for their second Big Ten title under Meyer, but they missed out on the College Football Playoff.

Now the Buckeyes are back and find themselves in a similar position. They’ll be facing a Northwestern team that took an unusual route to Indianapolis. The Wildcats finished the season 8-4, going 8-1 in Big Ten play to win the West Division, becoming the first team in Power Five history to win their division despite going winless in nonconference play.

If Northwestern is to win the Big Ten this year it will have to do something else you don’t see very often: beat Ohio State. The Buckeyes have dominated this series, going 61-14-1 in the first 76 meetings and they’ve won 30 of the last 31 meetings.

Ohio State: Ohio State played its best game of the season last week against Michigan, crushing its rival 62-39. As impressive as the victory was, however, it only moved the Buckeyes to No. 6 in the College Football Playoff rankings, behind both Georgia and Oklahoma. So if Ohio State wants to reach the playoff this season, it not only needs to beat Northwestern but will have to do so in highly-impressive fashion. This can’t be a close, tough victory. The Buckeyes will need to treat the Wildcats the same way they treated the Wolverines last week.

Northwestern: Way back on Sept. 16, Northwestern blew a 21-3 lead to Akron and lost to the Zips 39-34 after allowing Akron to score two defensive touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Can you imagine if somebody told you after that game that this same Wildcats team would go 8-1 in Big Ten play and end up in Indianapolis? As preposterous as it may have seemed then, though, it’s the reality now. The Wildcats have made a habit out of playing close games this season, never winning or losing by more than 14. While the formula might not be pretty, it’s worked for them all season long. Now they’re hoping that following it for just one more week will result in a Big Ten championship.

Northwestern is a great story and it’s a much better team than the one we saw in September. Still, it’s benefitted from a down season in the Big Ten, and it hasn’t faced a task as tough as the one it’s getting in Indianapolis. The Buckeyes advantages in this game are everywhere, and with the extra motivation of a possible playoff berth, I’m fully expecting Ohio State to come out with a performance similar to what we saw last week. Pick: Ohio State -14.5

So what college football picks can you make with confidence on Championship Week? Fans who want to watch Texas and Oklahoma square off in the Big 12 title game, but can’t make it to a television will be in luck, with livestream coverage of the game available for just about any device they can find.

The Longhorns and Sooners will meet Saturday in what is likely to be a heated affair with strong implications for the College Football Playoff. As ESPN noted, it will be the first rematch of the college football powerhouses in 115 years and has already generated plenty of trash talk between both sides.

The talk was kicked off by Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, who laughed and said “no comment” when asked if he had respect for Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Players from both sides have also said they’re ready for a physical game.

“It’s gonna be a dirty game,” Texas defensive tackle Chris Nelson said. “You’ll probably see hitting after the whistle. You’ll probably see a lot of stuff if you keep your eyes open.

The stakes will be very high as well. The No. 5 Sooners are hoping to make their case for the College Football Playoff, but Texas can put an end to that and become just the second Longhorn team to beat Oklahoma twice in the same season.

For the Longhorns to win, they will need to find a way to stop a Sooners offense averaging 50.3 points per game this season. Todd Orlando, the Texas defensive coordinator, said he doesn’t plan to count on the same aggressive package of blitzes in a 48-45 win earlier this season, knowing that the Sooners will be ready to counter it.

“There’s some things from a game-plan standpoint that — not with a coach like [Lincoln] Riley — you’re just not going to go out and do certain things the way you did because they’re the top guys,” Orlando said, via the SB Nation blog Burnt Orange Nation. “He’s the top guy in the country when it comes to game planning and in terms of play calling. So if you go out there and you’re throwing stuff out there that they’re prepping for, you’re a fish in a barrel. That’s the way I look at it.”

Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET on ABC. Fans who want to watch a livestream of the Texas vs. Oklahoma game can find it at WatchESPN, while radio coverage can be found at Texas Sports.
